Whatever intricate detailing your work demands, the DeWalt DW788 20-Inch Scroll Saw is up to the task. Featuring a 1.3 Amp motor that delivers variable speed performance from 400 to 1,750 RPM, this saw makes use of a unique double parallel-link arm design that reduces vibration and noise significantly, helping you achieve phenomenal accuracy. This design allows the arm to pivot smoothly and easily from the back of the saw to the front, it keeps the blade perpendicular to you work surface to help you avoid over or under cutting, and it allows the arm to lift for inside cuts. The saw’s on-off switch, electronic speed control, and blade-tensioning lever are position on the upper part of the arm for easy access, along with a flexible dust blower that helps keep your work surface clear. DeWalt’s exclusive blade clamps makes blade changes tool-free for quick and easy switches, while an oversized table provides material support and bevels 45-degrees left or right for added versatility. This table is made of cast iron for exceptional durability. This DeWalt high-performance industrial tool comes with blades and a hex wrench, and it is backed by a 3-year limited warranty. more info

Pretty Good Saw
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Easy assembly. Almost ready to use right out of the box. The knob that tilts the table was broken in such a way that I didn’t even notice it until I went to tilt the table and found a rough edge. No idea where the rest of the knob is.
My only complaint is the “Hold Down” mechanism. It’s real sloppy. Keeping it level is worth a day’s pay. Seems like a company that could design such a great tool could figure that little accessory out better.
Pain in the neck that the Hold Down is, I’d still recommend the saw to anyone. It is a bit more expensive than the competition, but you buy cheap, you get cheap.
This is a good saw.
One Of The BEST
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
No sense writing a novel about this tool. But it should be said that this beats the cheaper models and brands of scroll saws, HANDS DOWN. If you’re used to using lightweight scrollers, you will be amazed at the precision you can achieve with this jewel of a saw. If you can swing the dollars to buy one, then don’t miss the opportunity to own this saw. Nuff sed !!!
Buy this saw better than most including Excaliber
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’m a serious user and own both the Dewalt and Excaliber EX21 both machines are designed by the same company in Canada. I have had the Dewalt for seven years and not a lick of problems. I had the EX21 two years and the motor and controller blew – maybe because the EX21 is now made in Taiwan. Needless to say at a $385 (parts replacement) price it ain’t getting repaired. I have gone back to using the DeWalt and will not change. Its a great machine for the serious crafter or woodworker.
Very Quite saw
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I can not understand the reviews that claim this saw is noisy or has excess vibration. I find the saw to be very quite and smooth. It has good power to cut 2″ stock and the table finish is very good. If you are upgrading from a low-end saw you will be very pleased with this saw.
DW788 Scroll Saw Review
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The DW788 scroll saw performs very well. It’s a huge improvment over the saw it replaced (Ryobe). The only suggestion I could make that would improve this saw would be to smooth up the machining of the table surface. The machine marks tend to trap fine sawdust. A good brushing from time to time is all it takes to clean it up. Not a serious problem.
MUCH Cheaper at Grizzly
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Grizzly sells a combo including the DW788 with Dewalt stand and light regularly for $499 and is on a spring sale for $50 less than that. All new. Save about $180 over Amazon and other sellers. Can’t understand why the price is so much higher elsewhere. (Grizzly shipping + $21.00). This is one of the few instances where Amazon is not even competitive… unfortunately.
Excellent value for the money.

I had purchased a Ryobi toy scroll saw about 7 years ago, and I was amazed at the level of detail I could create with it. I had been wanting to upgrade for years, and had done due diligence on every model offered. I read all the reviews and comparisons. I couldn’t afford a Hegner, (upwards of $1700), nor an Excalibur or an RBI Hawk ($700-$800 range). Being as how the DeWalt DW788 offered a lot of features of the higher-priced models, but at considerably less cost, I focused on finding as much info on it as possible.
After months of searching for info, I couldn’t really find anyone that had a bad thing to say about it. From rank amateurs to professional woodworking shops, everyone seemed to praise it. Sure I found one or two people that weren’t completely satisfied, but their complaints seemed trivial at best. So I went ahead and purchased one. Right here from Amazon.com. Amazon had the lowest price I could find. Sears will be happy to sell you one for $600 via their catalog, and I found a lot of places with similar pricing, but here is where I found the best deal. It qualified for the Super Saver Shipping, in which there is no shipping fee, but you’ll have to wait a couple extra days for it, so they say. Mine arrived within 5 days, and it saved me $47 in shipping costs.
Now, after playing with it for a few days, my primary reaction was WOW! Quite a marvel of engineering and workmanship. Shipped halfway around the world and most of the Southeastern U.S., punted from UPS truck to UPS truck, I installed the table (the only assembly you need to do, two screws), and chucked a blade in it. I set about the task of squaring the table to the blade (a daunting and frequently necessary task with my old Ryobi), and the blade was dead square side to side and front to back, right out of the box! At the slower speeds, you actually have to visually look to see if the thing is on, it’s dead quiet and almost vibration-free. And boy-o-boy does it cut well. It has already allowed me to finish up a couple of projects I deemed too difficult for my old saw. I love the up-front controls, as my old saw had the blade tension adjustment at the back of the saw. Some of the projects I cut can have several hundred interior cuts, each requiring me to stand up and reach to the back of the saw, sometimes more than once to get the exact tension I want, so believe me when I tell you that up-front tension control is a nice feature. Another nice thing about the tension control is that it has an indexed scale, and you can always return to the exact tension setting. Oh, and I have yet to break a blade, I’ve even tried to. That was a regular occurrence with my old saw.
My only complaint is completely trivial, and I’ll learn to adjust my cutting style to it, but the upper blade holders thumb screw can beat your right index finger to a pulp if you get your hand in too close.
I haven’t yet had it long enough to judge how it will do over the long haul, but I am very impressed with the quality and workmanship. I have already been able to discover that this saw will allow me to take my skills to the next level, and perhaps beyond. Bottom line, if you’re thinking about a mid-level srollsaw, then this is the one you’ve been looking for.
DeWalt Scroll Saw
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I had to back into purchasing a DeWalt scroll saw when Sears failed to ship my purchase. It was my good fortune. Although the saw costs considerably more than the Craftsman, it is a terrific piece of equipment. It is quiet, smooth running and well built. It easily cut through thick pecan wood that my previous saw could not handle. The power, tension and speed controls are easy to work. Blade changes seem a little awkward.

Placed order and product shipped very quickly. Unfortunately, the knob for the bevel on the table was broken. Had to ship the whole thing back for a replacement. Although it ended up taking about ten days in all, the second product was in excellent condition and the product works great!
Dewalt Scroll Saw
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The Dewalt scroll saw is very smooth running. The blade travel is almost verticle making tight turns easy. The blade clamps hold well and are easy to use for quick blade changes. The dust blower is easy to place and does a good job.
The only thing that I would add would be a connection under the table for a dust collection system.
